The new address for Middle East peace and security

Text Size: A A A

Darcy Burner, Democrat (WA-08)

American foreign policy has always meant something deeply personal for Darcy Burner and her family. She grew up with a father in the Air Force. Her husband has served in the Army, and now her brother is an Iraq War veteran.

Burner attended Harvard on scholarship and worked her way through school, graduating with a degree in computer science and economics. She pursued a career in technology, working as a programmer and manager, most recently at Microsoft.

In 2006, Burner ran one of the most surprising and close challenges in the country, coming within 4,727 votes of beating freshman Congressman Rep. Dave Reichert. Her campaign was fueled in large part by support from the "Netroots. "

Now she returned to finish the job, and JStreetPAC was proud to help.

Darcy Burner is deeply committed to charting a new course for American foreign policy in the Middle East. As a candidate, she has become one of the leading advocates of bringing the war in Iraq to a responsible end and bringing "the troops home safely and with honor." To chart a responsible path out of Iraq, Darcy asked Gen. Paul Eaton (Ret.) and other military experts to put together a sound plan for disengaging from Iraq. The plan, called "A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq," now has the support of 55 other House candidates.

In JStreetPAC's endorsement interview with Darcy, she emphasized the critical role that ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict peacefully and diplomatically will play in stabilizing the Middle East and restoring American leadership and credibility, both in the Middle East and around the world. She supports a strong relationship between the U.S. and Israel, as well as a two-state solution "in which an independent, democratic, and economically-viable Palestine lives side-by-side with a secure, democratic, and Jewish Israel." Burner states on her website that the Bush administration "has done incalculable damage" by "failing to devote sufficient attention to the Middle East peace process." She urges our government to "regain its role as an honest broker in mediating a just and lasting peace."

In contrast, Burner's opponent, Representative Dave Reichert, has been a consistent supporter of the failed Bush-Cheney policies of the past seven and a half years. He has repeatedly advocated for an "all-stick and no carrot" approach to the region's conflicts. He signed on to the harsh early version of the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006, placing severe restrictions on US aid to the Palestinian Authority that would significantly reduce the ability of the Palestinian Authority to help create the political conditions for a two-state solution agreement with Israel.

For us, this was an easy choice. We were proud to stand with Darcy Burner in her renewed effort to defeat Rep. Reichert.
