Rabbi Dennis Shulman, Democrat (NJ-05)
"We keep sending career politicians to Washington and what do we have to show for it? A big mess. It may very well take a blind man to show Congress the light." - Dennis Shulman
Blind since childhood, Rabbi Shulman boasts a doctorate in clinical psychology from Harvard and currently serves as associate rabbi of Chavurah Beth Shalom in Alpine, New Jersey. Even before setting foot in Congress, Mr. Shulman has made his voice heard on our issues. Mr. Shulman signed his name to the letter, “A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq,” a proposal aimed at restoring peace and stability to Iraq. Endorsed by 55 other Democratic challengers for Congress, the letter calls for the honorable withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.
When we met with Rabbi Shulman, we were impressed with his interest in taking a leadership role on JStreetPAC issues. During our interview, Rabbi Shulman said he was “outraged” over the current direction of US foreign policy. He also spoke about his support for a strong relationship between the United States and Israel and his firm belief in a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He also stated that a renewed and aggressive American diplomatic effort in the Middle East would serve both American interests and our ally Israel.
Rabbi Shulman’s opponent, Republican incumbent Rep. Scott Garrett, stands in direct opposition to JStreetPAC positions. As a signer on the early draft of the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006 that placed severe restrictions on US aid to the Palestinian Authority, Garrett supported legislation that would have made it much more difficult to create the political conditions for a lasting two-state solution agreement – legislation that further corroded trust in America’s traditional role as an honest broker for peace.
He has been married to his wife, Pam, an obstetrician, for 33 years. They are proud parents of two adult daughters, Holly and Julie.
We were happy to count him as part of our first round of JStreetPAC candidate endorsements.
