Working class progressive champion John Fetterman is the new junior Senator from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Fetterman burst onto the national scene as the mayor of Braddock, a small “forgotten” industrial community in Pennsylvania. He became renowned for his town’s revitalization efforts, his direct demeanor and his unconventional, down-to-earth style. After an unsuccessful Senate bid in 2016, he ran and won the race for Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor in 2018. In 2022, he was victorious in the marquee Senate race of the cycle, defeating Republican nominee and Trump-endorsee Mehmet Oz by an impressive margin.
Senator Fetterman is an exciting new ally for J Street’s work. He has publicly expressed support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for Israeli normalization with its neighbors. Fetterman has criticized President Trump’s decision to abandon the Iran nuclear deal, calling it a “mistake,” and has pledged on numerous occasions to prioritize diplomacy in foreign policy writ large.
