Pragmatic progressive Tom Carper has earned a reputation for consensus building since his election to the Senate in 2000. His laser focus on tackling tough issues by forging bipartisan compromise is unique in today’s political climate.
Senator Carper previously represented Delaware in Congress from 1983 to 1993 and served as Governor from 1993 to 2001. He is known for his daily commute on the Amtrak train from Delaware to Washington while the Senate is in session.
During his tenure in the Senate, Sen. Carper has demonstrated a relentless commitment to pro-Israel, pro-peace policies. On the two-state solution, he has said, “I strongly believe that the two sides of this decades-long conflict are capable of achieving peace through a two-state solution, a goal that requires consistent and engaged leadership by the United States.” In May of 2020, Senator Carper signed a letter strongly cautioning that Israeli unilateral annexation of the West Bank puts both Israel’s security and democracy at risk.
