Barbara Lee

  • Primary Approved
  • Senate, california

Barbara Lee is one of three JStreetPAC 'Primary Approved' candidates running to fill retiring Senator Dianne Feinstein's California Senate seat in the March 5, 2024 top two primary. Competitors Katie Porter and Adam Schiff are also primary approved.

A veteran progressive champion, Lee has represented her East Bay House district since 1998 and serves as the highest-ranking African-American woman in Democratic Leadership.

Known for her judgment, courage and foresight, Congresswoman Lee skyrocketed to national attention as the only Member of Congress to oppose President Bush’s 2001 request for open-ended congressional authorization for the use of military force.

Her warning that the AUMF would be abused as a blank check for endless conflict has proved prescient, with the authorization having now been used for decades to engage in military action without congressional oversight.

Lee serves on the House Budget Committee, the Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs. She has led congressional responses to poverty and HIV and has led the fight to repeal the 2001 AUMF and champion diplomacy-first leadership.

Barbara Lee is a true J Street champion.

In Congress, Lee co-sponsored H.Res. 326 reaffirming congressional commitment to a two-state solution and opposition to harmful steps by either side, including settlement expansion. She has been a consistent proponent for continued development aid to the Palestinian people and security aid to Israel.

In 2019 and 2020, Lee introduced resolutions supporting a diplomatic approach to preventing Iran from gaining nuclear weapons capabilities and opposing unilateral, unauthorized military action.
