Rep Bennie Thompson has served Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District since being elected in 1993. He has the distinction of being the longest-serving African American elected official in the state of Mississippi.
Prior to his Congressional service, Thompson was a leader in the civil rights movement. He also served as Alderman for and later Mayor of the city of Bolton, as well as a county supervisor for over a decade. Thompson is a senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, and was the first Democrat to chair the committee in its history.
Thompson is a strong J Street ally in Congress, signing onto several letters and pieces of legislation.
Thompson attended Tougaloo College, earning his Bachelor of Arts in political science. He was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and volunteered on the congressional campaign of famed civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. Thompson also received a master of science degree in educational administration from Jackson State University.
