  • Senate, oregon

Jeff Merkley is a proud progressive serving as the junior Senator from Oregon, a position he has held since 2008.

A life-long Oregonian, Merkley was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1998, eventually rising to become the Speaker of the House in 2006. During his tenure, he passed many major policies, including increasing public school funding, outlawing discrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity in housing and the workplace, and giving same-sex couples rights, immunities and benefits.

Senator Merkley serves on the Appropriations Committee, where he also serves as the chair of the Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies. Merkley is also the chairman of the Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight on the Committee on Environment and Public Works. He also serves on the Committees on the Budget, Foreign Relations and Rules and Administration.

Merkley is a true champion for J Street values.

He is a strong ally on the Appropriations and Foreign Affairs committees, where he advocates for policies that support a two-state solution and push back against incitement, home demolitions and settlement expansion.

Sen. Merkley introduced a letter in the Senate in May 2022 that denounced plans for the Israeli government’s demolition and evictions of the West Bank communities of Masafer Yatta. In 2019, he introduced S.Res 234, which reaffirmed Senate support for a two-state solution, support for Israel’s security, and opposition to settlement expansion and annexation.
