With J Street's support, progressive advocate Summer Lee defeated an onslaught of AIPAC spending in both the primary and the general to earn her place in Congress in the 2022 midterms.
Lee campaigned for her Pittsburgh and Allegheny County district on a platform of economic justice, workers rights and climate action.
Local pro-Israel, pro-peace, pro-democracy J Street members were strongly engaged in supporting her campaign against almost $4 million in super PAC spending against Lee from AIPAC. After initially launching attack ads during the primary, AIPAC spent more than $1 million in support of her Republican opponent in the general.
As J Street’s local chapter made clear, there is no contradiction between Lee’s strong and clear support for international law, human rights and Palestinian self-determination and her firm commitment to Israel’s security and US military aid, and her recognition of the importance of Israel as a democratic homeland for the Jewish people.
