Former Representative Tom Malinowski is running for New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, vacated by Mikie Sherrill following her election as Governor of New Jersey — an important special election that will be held early in 2026. He's a former diplomat, human rights activist, and member of Congress who represented New Jersey's 7th district between 2019 and 2023.
Malinowski served as the Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor during the Obama administration. Prior to that, he was the Washington Director of Human Rights Watch and, before that, served as a Senior Director at the National Security Council during the Clinton Administration.
He received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a Master of Philosophy from St. Anthony's College, Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
