Tony Vargas has devoted his career to public service and is now running to flip Nebraska’s 2nd District. Vargas was the J Street endorsed Democratic nominee in the 2nd district in 2022, and lost by less than 6,000 votes.
Vargas is a former public school teacher and member of the Omaha Public School Board, and he has served in the Nebraska Legislature since 2016. He was re-elected in 2020 with more than 75% of the vote, the largest margin of any incumbent lawmaker in the legislature.
As a state senator, Tony has developed a reputation for civility and getting things done for Nebraska workers and small businesses. He has successfully passed legislation to strengthen public schools, improve access to health care, encourage technology and innovation, and improve consumer protections.
Tony believes that the” United States-Israel relationship has strengthened both our countries for more than 70 years and constitutes one of our most vital alliances and partnerships.” He knows that “we must assist Israel in maintaining its qualitative military edge over adversaries that have sworn to destroy it, while maintaining the Iron Dome, Arrow, and David’s Sling missile defense systems that protect Israeli neighborhoods and save lives.”
Tony also said he “will always advocate for a two-state solution that is the only way to preserve Israel as a Jewish democracy and believe we must take a leadership role in bringing both sides to the table to achieve such an outcome.” To reach an eventual resolution, Tony believes that “Israel must end its illegal settlement activity in the West Bank, refrain from any unilateral acts of annexation, and respect human rights in the Palestinian Territories as key steps toward an agreement.”
