A former diplomat and national security advisor, Andy Kim won a hard-fought campaign by a razor-thin margin in the 2018 midterms, making him the first Democratic Member of Congress of Korean descent. He’s continued to represent his southern and central New Jersey district ever since.
Known as one of the friendliest, kindest members of Congress, Kim gained national prominence on January 7, 2021, when a picture of him cleaning up the Capitol Hill Rotunda, following the January 6 insurrection, went viral.
Prior to his election, Kim served in Afghanistan as a civilian adviser to Generals David Petraeus and John R. Allen before serving on the National Security Council under President Barack Obama.
Kim sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Armed Services, including the Subcommittee on Intelligence, Emerging Threats and Capabilities. He is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
Rep. Kim is a strong J Street ally.
With experience in national security and defense, Kim has a unique understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
During the 2021 Gaza escalation, Kim called on President Biden to pursue an immediate ceasefire and engage in longer term diplomacy to reduce tensions, reaffirm support for Israel’s security, reaffirm support for humanitarian aid to Gaza, and increase the level and quality of engagement with Palestinian representatives.
Rep. Kim co-sponsored H.Res. 326, reaffirming congressional commitment to the two-state solution and opposition to settlement expansion and annexation.
