A lifelong resident of the New York Capital Region, progressive champion Paul Tonko has represented the area in Congress since his election in 2008.

Prior to his election in the House, Tonko served from 1983 to 2007 in the New York State Assembly. A champion for climate action, he was CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority from 2007 to 2008. In Congress, he has pushed for a clean energy economy that enhances public health and supports an emerging market for new jobs.

Tonko serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee, where he previously chaired the Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change. He also serves on the Natural Resources and Science, Space, and Technology committees.

Rep. Tonko is a J Street champion.

He consistently supports each J Street vehicle, including H.R. 5344, the Two-State Solution Act. He signed onto the bicameral Merkley-Stansbury letter urging the Biden Administration to push back on planned demolitions and evictions in Masafer Yatta, and also signed the Price-Lee-Wexton-Castro letter, which urged pushback against “flashpoints” in the conflict.
