Pramila Jayapal has represented Seattle since 2017 when she became the first Indian-American woman elected to the House.
Described by then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as a "a rising star in the Democratic caucus,” Jayapal is often at the forefront of both domestic and foreign policy debates. The former immigrants' rights activist was recognized by the Obama White House as a “Champion of Change” in 2013 for her leadership in political and legal advocacy.
Domestically, Jayapal has worked to build congressional support for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal and tuition-free college. Internationally, she has led efforts to curtail US support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, address Holocaust denial in Ukraine and Poland, and backed President Obama’s decision to allow a UN Security Council Resolution which described Israeli settlements as illegal.
She sits on the Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, as well as the Committee on the Budget. She is a past Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and is a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
