Peter Welch has represented Vermont in Congress since 2007. After serving in the House of Representatives from 2007-2023, he was elected to the Senate in 2022. He serves on the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, the Committee on Finance, the Committee on Rules and Administration, and the Committee on the Judiciary where he is subcommittee ranking member on the Constitution.
Senator Welch was first elected to the Vermont State Senate in 1980. Within five years, he was unanimously elected by his colleagues to lead the chamber, becoming the first Democrat in Vermont history to hold the position of President Pro Tempore.
Senator Welch has a proud history of backing diplomacy-first foreign policy, opposing the war in Iraq and advocating for a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
