Climate champion Brian Schatz is Hawaii’s senior Senator. He was appointed to the seat in 2012 after the death of longtime senator, Daniel Inouye.
Senator Schatz served as Hawaii’s Lieutenant Governor and in the Hawaii State House of Representatives before his tenure in the Senate. Since joining the Senate, he has focused on helping workers, veterans, and families.
He chairs the Indian Affairs Committee, and serves on the Committees on Appropriations, Foreign Relations, and Commerce, Science and Transportation. In addition to his legislative work, he is part of the Democratic Caucus’ leadership team as Deputy Conference Secretary and Chief Deputy Whip.
Senator Schatz is a J Street Champion. His position on the Foreign Affairs Committee and his Jewish background inform his values, which strongly align with J Street. He has signed onto each recent J Street vehicle, including the letter introduced by Senators Tim Kaine and Chris Murphy urging the Biden Administration to rejoin President Obama’s Iran Deal, which verifiably blocked Iran's path to nuclear weapons. He also signed the bicameral Merkley-Stansbury letter that pushed back against demolitions and evictions in the West Bank communities of Masafer Yatta.
