Former Las Cruces City Councilman Gabe Vasquez flipped his southern New Mexico House seat during the 2022 midterms in one of the closest races in the country.
A first-generation American who spent his childhood living on both sides of the US-Mexico border, Vasquez joined the staff of fellow J Street endorsee Senator Martin Heinrich in 2013. In 2017, he won a seat on the Las Cruces City Council with over 70% of the vote.
Vasquez’s campaign focused on working families, economic opportunity and the rising cost of living. He also holds a strong focus on public lands conservation and responsible use of natural resources.
Rep. Vasquez is closely aligned with J Street's values and priorities.
He uses his experience growing up on two sides of a border to inform his foreign policy positions and has expressed support for a diplomacy-first solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, opposing incitement, violence and injustice from all corners.
