Known to be one of the nation's most effective lawmakers, progressive champion Hank Johnson has represented Dekalb, Newton and Rockdale counties in the House since 2007.
As a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Johnson has introduced, co-sponsored and passed legislation that protects consumers and citizens' civil liberties, including the FAIR Act and the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act (SMLEA). SMLEA is part of the historic George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a legislative priority of the Congressional Black Caucus in response to police violence against African Americans.
Congressman Johnson was born in Washington, DC and earned his BA in political science from Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) and his JD from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. Prior to serving in Congress, he practiced law for 27 years in Decatur, Georgia, specializing in criminal defense, civil rights and personal injury law. He also served as a magistrate judge for 12 years and as a DeKalb County commissioner for five years.
