Zach Wahls, an Iowa state senator, is running for Iowa's open U.S. Senate seat.
Wahls earned national attention in 2011 when he, at age 19, testified before the Iowa House Judiciary Committee about growing up with gay parents, in defense of gay marriage. Wahls also co-founded Scouts for Equality, the national campaign that led to the end of the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay people.
Wahls was first elected to the Iowa State Senate in 2018. He became Iowa Senate Democratic Leader in November 2020 and served in that role until 2023. He received a B.A. from the University of Iowa and an M.P.A. from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs.
