Josh Turek, a two-time Paralympic gold medalist for Team USA, is running for the open Senate seat in Iowa. He currently serves a state legislator, representing the reddest seat held by a Democrat in the state.
Turek won his first election to the Iowa legislature by just six votes. In his first reelection campaign, he expanded his margin of victory to more than five points, even as Donald Trump carried his district.
Born with spina bifida, he underwent 21 surgeries by his twelfth birthday and went on to represent the United States at four Paralympic Games as a member of the wheelchair basketball team. He has the distinction of being the Iowa legislature’s first permanently disabled member.
