Chris Backemeyer is a Democrat running to unseat GOP incumbent Mike Flood in Nebraska's 1st Congressional District.
After watching the horrors of September 11, Backemeyer was motivated to become a public servant. He served in the U.S. State Department under both Democratic and Republican administrations, rising to become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Assistance Coordination and Regional and Multilateral Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs after years of extensive work on U.S. policy toward Iran.
During the Obama Administration, Backemeyer served as the Director for Iran on the White House National Security Council and later as an advisor in the Executive Office of Vice President Harris, where he advised her on national security and Middle East policy, as well as international economics and climate change.
