Diplomacy-first stalwart Jim McGovern has represented the Worcester area and upper Pioneer Valley since 1997.
McGovern started his career as a staffer for Sen. George McGovern (to whom he is not related). A member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, he has long been known as a progressive foreign policy leader.
McGovern previously chaired the House Committee on Rules and the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. He is a co-chair of the No War with Iran Caucus, which was formed to de-escalate tensions with Iran in the aftermath of President Trump's abandonment of the nuclear agreement.
Congressman McGovern is a J Street champion.
He was an original co-sponsor of H.R. 5344, the Two State Solution Act — a milestone piece of legislation which presented various mechanisms for bringing about an eventual peace. McGovern also signed onto a letter addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines requesting a briefing on Israel’s designation of six Palestinian NGOs as “terrorist organizations” and the secret evidence distributed by the Israeli government.
McGovern is a major proponent of using diplomacy to address Iran’s malign actions and influence. He is on the record blasting the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from President Obama's Iran deal, which verifiably blocked Iran's path to nuclear weapons.
