Lloyd Doggett has represented his Austin-based district since 1995. He is the co-dean of Texas’s congressional delegation, along with Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
Doggett served as a member of the Texas Senate from 1973 to 1985. In 1989, he became an Associate Justice of the Texas Supreme Court. In Congress, Doggett has a consistent record as a progressive Democrat. He has described himself as a “stout” defender of Social Security, Medicare and public education. Doggett has also been an outspoken proponent of diplomacy-first foreign policy: he was one of the leading opponents of the authorization of the Iraq War and actively supported President Obama's Iran deal, which verifiably blocked Iran's path to nuclear weapons.
In Congress, Rep. Doggett has been a J Street champion.
He was an original co-sponsor of H.R. 5344, the Two State Solution Act — a milestone piece of legislation which presented various mechanisms for bringing about an eventual peace. Doggett also signed the 2021 Dingell-Lowenthal letter, which called on the US government to provide humanitarian relief to the people of Gaza.
