A champion of public service, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier was elected 2014 to represent the voters in the East Bay suburbs.
Prior to Congress, DeSaulnier worked a variety of jobs such as as a probation officer, truck driver and hotel services employee. DeSaulnier later went on to own and operate several restaurants in San Francisco, which has informed his advocacy for small businesses.
DeSaulnier is a longtime supporter of strong environmental regulations, public health and education rights. His work in Congress has included serving on a variety of committees including the House Committee on Education and Labor and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
Rep. DeSaulnier is an ally of J Street.
In May of 2021, he signed the Dingell-Lowenthal letter on Gaza humanitarian relief and a year later signed the Merkley-Stansbury letter calling on the Biden Administration to prevent the forced displacement of Palestinians in the communities of Masafer Yatta.
DeSaulnier supported President Obama's Iran deal, which verifiably blocked Iran's path to nuclear weapons. Following the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the agreement, DeSaulnier said, “at a time when tensions are high in the Middle East and smart diplomacy is critical to preventing conflict, withdrawal could embolden Iran as a greater threat in the region, will erode American credibility on the international stage, and will isolate us from other world leaders who are remaining in the deal."
