The first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi is a lifelong public servant, having served her San Francisco district since her election in 1986.
Pelosi is an iconoclast in the Democratic Party. She was the first woman in either chamber of Congress to hold the positions of minority whip and then minority leader, culminating in her 2007 accession to the Speakership. Rep. Pelosi is also the first person in over half a century to hold the Speakership twice.
Rep. Pelosi’s tenure in leadership saw the Iraq War, the passage of the Affordable Care Act, two separate impeachments, the COVID-19 pandemic and countless other historic moments.
